Recognizing the academic importance and growing interest in philosophical studies, the department introduced the B.A. (Major/Honours) course in 2001.

Since its inception, the department has been committed to fostering a rational, reflective, and value-based outlook among learners, particularly in a rural and educationally backward region. The department owes its foundation and growth to the dedicated efforts of its Founder Teachers—Ramani Mohan Sarma, Dipanjali Devi, Tarun Sarma, and Rudra Kalita, whose vision and commitment laid a strong academic base.

Through classroom teaching, seminars, discussions, and extension activities, the department encourages students to engage with Indian and Western philosophical traditions, moral values, and contemporary issues, thereby contributing to holistic education and social responsibility.
