The Department of Philosophy of Deomornoi Degree College was established in 1994 with the introduction of the B.A. (General) course, with the aim of promoting critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and intellectual inquiry among students. Recognizing the academic importance and growing interest in philosophical studies, the department introduced the B.A. (Major/Honours) course in 2001.

Since its inception, the department has been committed to fostering a rational, reflective, and value-based outlook among learners, particularly in a rural and educationally backward region. The department owes its foundation and growth to the dedicated efforts of its Founder Teachers—Ramani Mohan Sarma, Dipanjali Devi, Tarun Sarma, and Rudra Kalita, whose vision and commitment laid a strong academic base.

Through classroom teaching, seminars, discussions, and extension activities, the department encourages students to engage with Indian and Western philosophical traditions, moral values, and contemporary issues, thereby contributing to holistic education and social responsibility.

Title: Celebration of World Philosophy Day

Objective:
The primary objective of observing World Philosophy Day was to inspire students to engage with philosophical thought and develop critical and reflective discourse. The event aimed to highlight the relevance of philosophy in addressing contemporary issues and fostering intellectual growth among students.

Participants:
A total of 77 individuals participated in the event, including the resource persons, faculty members, students, and office staff.

Programme Description:

On the 21st of November 2024, the Department of Philosophy, in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Deomornoi Degree College, celebrated World Philosophy Day with great enthusiasm and reverence.

The programme commenced with the ceremonial lighting of an earthen lamp by Dr. Manoj Kumar Sarma, HoD, Department of Philosophy. This was followed by the formal inauguration of the event by Dr. Gitali Kalita, Principal of the college. In her address, Dr. Kalita elaborated on the significance of World Philosophy Day, especially in today’s context where philosophical reflection is essential for bridging societal divides and promoting ethical values.

The highlight of the event was a special lecture delivered by Mr. Mohibul Islam, HoD of the English Department. He spoke on the theme of World Philosophy Day 2024, “Philosophy: Bridging Social Gaps”, offering a compelling narrative on how philosophical thinking can contribute to social cohesion, understanding, and justice.

 

Further enriching the programme, IQAC Coordinator Mr. Ajit Kumar Sarma shared his thoughts on the philosophical aspects of education and their impact on quality assurance in higher learning. Student representative Ms. Dikshita Kashyap also presented an insightful speech, expressing how philosophy influences youth perspectives and shapes a more inclusive worldview.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Nilima Baruah, Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy. She expressed her gratitude to all the guests, participants, and organizers for their valuable contributions to the success of the event.

Quiz Competition:

Following the lecture session, an open quiz competition was organized for the students. The competition was conducted by Mr. Mainul Hoque, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, who served as the quiz master. The quiz tested students’ knowledge of philosophy, logic, and prominent thinkers. More than 60 students were participated in this competition.

The winners of the quiz competition were as follows:

  • 1st Prize: Chayanika Deka
  • 2nd Prize: Pullakesh Sarma
  • 3rd Prize: Janki Kalita

The event was a resounding success and served as a platform for students and faculty to explore the depth and relevance of philosophy in today’s world. It also fostered a spirit of inquiry, dialogue, and intellectual engagement among the attendees.

Objective:
The primary objective of observing World Philosophy Day was to inspire students to engage with philosophical thought and develop critical and reflective discourse. The event aimed to highlight the relevance of philosophy in addressing contemporary issues and fostering intellectual growth among students.

Participants:
A total of 77 individuals participated in the event, including the resource persons, faculty members, students, and office staff.

Programme Description:

On the 21st of November 2024, the Department of Philosophy, in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Deomornoi Degree College, celebrated World Philosophy Day with great enthusiasm and reverence.

The programme commenced with the ceremonial lighting of an earthen lamp by Dr. Manoj Kumar Sarma, HoD, Department of Philosophy. This was followed by the formal inauguration of the event by Dr. Gitali Kalita, Principal of the college. In her address, Dr. Kalita elaborated on the significance of World Philosophy Day, especially in today’s context where philosophical reflection is essential for bridging societal divides and promoting ethical values.

The highlight of the event was a special lecture delivered by Mr. Mohibul Islam, HoD of the English Department. He spoke on the theme of World Philosophy Day 2024, “Philosophy: Bridging Social Gaps”, offering a compelling narrative on how philosophical thinking can contribute to social cohesion, understanding, and justice.

 

Further enriching the programme, IQAC Coordinator Mr. Ajit Kumar Sarma shared his thoughts on the philosophical aspects of education and their impact on quality assurance in higher learning. Student representative Ms. Dikshita Kashyap also presented an insightful speech, expressing how philosophy influences youth perspectives and shapes a more inclusive worldview.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Nilima Baruah, Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy. She expressed her gratitude to all the guests, participants, and organizers for their valuable contributions to the success of the event.

Quiz Competition:

Following the lecture session, an open quiz competition was organized for the students. The competition was conducted by Mr. Mainul Hoque, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, who served as the quiz master. The quiz tested students’ knowledge of philosophy, logic, and prominent thinkers. More than 60 students were participated in this competition.

The winners of the quiz competition were as follows:

  • 1st Prize: Chayanika Deka
  • 2nd Prize: Pullakesh Sarma
  • 3rd Prize: Janki Kalita

The event was a resounding success and served as a platform for students and faculty to explore the depth and relevance of philosophy in today’s world. It also fostered a spirit of inquiry, dialogue, and intellectual engagement among the attendees.

On 30th March, 2023 Department of philosophy, Deomornoi Degree College organized a one-day faculty exchange programme under MoU signed between Deomornoi Degree College and Mangaldai College. In this programme Nabajyoti Doley, Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy, Mangaldai College was present as the faculty and he delivered a class among students of 2nd, 4th & 6th semester jointly on the topic Philosophy and Religion.

The students were immensely benefited from his lecture as he discussed various aspects related to the topic in new dimension. His lecture was highly motivational which captured the attention of the learners. Hence keeping in view, the success of the programme the department of philosophy as well as the other departments were greatly inspired to organized such teacher exchange programme in future.

Mohibul Islam, HoD Department of English Inaugurating the programme deliberately explained the significance of the world Philosophy Day in the present scenario. Assistant professor Ramen Chandra Lahkar attend the programme as the special lecturer and he deliver a lecture on the theme of world philosophy day-2022- ‘The human of the Future’.  Dr. Nripendra Deka, Assistant Professor, Department of Education was also present this programme and present a talk on the importance of philosophical teaching in human life. The Programme was anchored by IQAC coordinator Ajit Kumar Sarma. The programme finally come to an end with the vote of thanks offered by Manoj Kr. Sarma.
